In Beijing, the person chatting with you in fluent “Beijing dialect” might be a blonde-haired, blue-eyed lady. The volunteer wearing a red vest could be a foreign gentleman who has lived in Beijing for many years. Whether in the subway, shopping malls, office buildings, or green spaces in the parks, one can encounter people from all over the world in the city.
“Home is where the heart is.” For many foreign nationals, Beijing has become a beloved home away from home. What drew them here may have been a trip or study experience, but what keeps them here is Beijing’s openness and inclusiveness, its excellent international language environment, the convenience of work and daily life, cafés in the hutongs, and Beijing’s reputation as a global city.
