On May 13 and 14, collective interviews by foreign journalists on the resumption of work and use of technology in epidemic containment were carried out in Beijing. This event was co-organized by the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Municipal Government, and the Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology. More than 40 journalists from foreign media outlets such as the Associated Press, Reuters, AFP, RT International, RTVE, ZDF, and Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao were invited.
This is the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak that the city has organized foreign journalists to conduct in-depth interviews with companies. During the two days, they visited three foreign-funded companies in Beijing, including SMC China Co., Ltd., Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd., and Renesas Electronics. This gave them an “immersive” experience with health QR codes, temperature checks, protective clothing, disinfection, and other measures against the epidemic the companies have taken to resume operations. According to Arno van der Merwe, President and CEO of Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd., the company has developed a coronavirus prevention handbook and started resuming operations since February 10 on the premise of ensuring employee health and safety. It has also actively shared its experience with suppliers and business partners.
The journalists also went to biomedicine companies such as Wandong, InferVision, XABT, and Juxiechang Pharmaceuticals. They visited the labs and workshops to get a close look at the R&D and production of test kits, cutting-edge clinical devices, and AI-based testing. Chen Kuan, CEO of InferVision, said that its intelligent assisted coronavirus screening and disease surveillance systems have been applied at hospitals in Japan, Italy, the United States, and Germany, among others.
After two days of activities, foreign journalists were deeply impressed by what the companies had done in the resumption of operations and by their targeted and effective measures against the epidemic, praising that their experience is well worth learning.
